Ticks are blood-sucking arachnids known as vectors of diseases such as Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis. Prompt removal after a bite is essential.
What Is a Tick?
Ticks are small, blood-sucking arachnids belonging to the order Ixodida. They are found worldwide, especially in forests, tall grass, and shrubby areas. In Germany and Central Europe, the common castor bean tick (Ixodes ricinus) is the most prevalent species. Ticks feed on the blood of vertebrates, including humans, dogs, cats, and wild animals.
Life Cycle of a Tick
Ticks go through four developmental stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Each post-egg stage requires a blood meal before the tick can develop further. This life cycle can span several years.
- Larvae typically feed on small rodents.
- Nymphs often target medium-sized mammals and humans.
- Adult ticks prefer larger mammals such as deer or humans.
Ticks as Disease Vectors
Ticks are vectors, meaning they can transmit pathogens to their hosts. In Central Europe, two diseases are of particular importance:
Lyme Disease (Lyme Borreliosis)
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is one of the most common tick-borne illnesses in Europe. A characteristic early sign is a ring-shaped skin redness called erythema migrans around the bite site. If left untreated, the disease can affect the joints, nervous system, and heart.
Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE)
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection transmitted by certain tick species. It can lead to inflammation of the brain and meninges. An effective vaccine is available and recommended for people living in or traveling to high-risk areas.
How Do Ticks Behave During a Bite?
After coming into contact with a host, ticks seek out warm, thin-skinned areas such as the back of the knees, armpits, the hairline, and the groin. They cut into the skin and feed on blood, often secreting a local anesthetic so the host does not feel the bite.
First Aid After a Tick Bite
If a tick is found, it should be removed as quickly as possible. The shorter the tick remains attached, the lower the risk of pathogen transmission.
- Grasp the tick with fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool as close to the skin surface as possible.
- Pull the tick out slowly and steadily – do not twist or squeeze it.
- Do not apply oil, glue, or other substances to the tick.
- Disinfect the bite site and note the date and location of the bite.
- Seek medical attention if redness, fever, or other symptoms develop in the weeks following the bite.
Preventing Tick Bites
The following measures can reduce the risk of tick bites:
- Wear long clothing when walking in forests or tall grass.
- Apply insect repellents to exposed skin and clothing.
- Thoroughly check your body for ticks after spending time outdoors.
- Keep TBE vaccinations up to date if you live in or visit risk areas.
