The trabecular artery is a small blood vessel within the spleen that carries blood through splenic tissue, supporting immune defense and blood filtration.
What Is the Trabecular Artery?
The trabecular artery is a small arterial blood vessel located within the connective tissue framework of the spleen, known as the trabeculae. It forms an important segment of the spleen's internal blood supply, channeling blood from the splenic artery (arteria splenica) progressively into the finer structures of splenic tissue.
Anatomical Structure and Location
The spleen has a characteristic internal architecture made up of fibrous connective tissue bands called trabeculae. These trabeculae extend inward from the fibrous capsule of the spleen, forming a network throughout the organ. Running alongside nerve fibers and connective tissue within these trabeculae are the trabecular veins and the trabecular artery.
- The trabecular artery branches off from the splenic artery and travels within the trabeculae.
- It then leaves the trabeculae and enters the white pulp tissue of the spleen, where it is referred to as the central artery.
- The central artery is surrounded by a sheath of lymphoid tissue known as the periarteriolar lymphoid sheath (PALS).
Function of the Trabecular Artery
The primary role of the trabecular artery is the distribution of blood within the spleen. It is a key component of the splenic circulation and enables the two main functions of this organ:
Immune Defense
Because of the close relationship between the trabecular artery, the downstream central artery, and the surrounding lymphoid tissue (white pulp), lymphocytes and macrophages can directly interact with the circulating blood. Pathogens, foreign particles, and abnormal blood cells are recognized and eliminated in this way.
Blood Filtration
Blood passing through the trabecular artery eventually reaches the red pulp, where aged or damaged erythrocytes (red blood cells) are filtered out and broken down. This process is sometimes referred to as culling of blood cells.
Clinical Relevance
Diseases affecting the spleen, such as splenomegaly (enlargement of the spleen) or splenic rupture, can impair blood flow within the trabeculae and the trabecular arteries. In the case of a splenic infarction, occlusion of small arterial branches including the trabecular artery leads to localized tissue death within the spleen. Imaging techniques such as ultrasound or MRI can be used to detect pathological changes in splenic perfusion.
