Cholagogue tablets are herbal medicines used to support digestion. They stimulate bile flow and help relieve symptoms such as bloating, flatulence, and a feeling of fullness.
What is a Cholagogue Tablet?
Cholagogue tablets are herbal medicinal products traditionally used to support digestion and promote the flow of bile. The term derives from the Greek word chole (bile). These tablets typically contain plant-based active compounds known as cholagogues, which stimulate bile production in the liver and encourage the emptying of the gallbladder. They belong to the group of digestive remedies (digestives) and are commonly used for functional gastrointestinal complaints.
Ingredients and Mechanism of Action
Cholagogue tablets typically contain a combination of well-established herbal extracts. Commonly used active ingredients include:
- Artichoke leaf extract – stimulates bile production in the liver and supports fat digestion
- Dandelion root and herb – promotes bile flow and has a mild digestive-stimulating effect
- Boldo leaf extract – traditionally used to stimulate bile secretion
- Turmeric (curcuma) – possesses choleretic properties, meaning it promotes bile production
These active ingredients work in two main ways: they are choleretic (increasing bile production by the liver) and cholakinetic (promoting the emptying of the gallbladder). By improving bile production and release, fat digestion is made easier, which can relieve common complaints such as bloating, flatulence, and a feeling of pressure in the upper abdomen.
Indications and Uses
Cholagogue tablets are commonly used for the following complaints:
- Digestive discomfort after fatty meals
- Feelings of fullness and bloating
- Pressure or discomfort in the upper abdomen
- Support for sluggish gallbladder function
- Mild, functional gallbladder or bile duct complaints
Use is generally indicated for functional complaints, meaning those without a structural or organic cause. For serious diseases of the liver, gallbladder, or bile ducts, a doctor should always be consulted.
Dosage and Administration
The dosage of cholagogue tablets depends on the specific product and its active ingredient content. General guidelines include:
- Tablets are typically taken before meals to optimally support digestion.
- The recommended daily dose should not be exceeded.
- A treatment course of several weeks is possible but should be discussed with a doctor or pharmacist.
Always follow the package leaflet of the respective product and consult a doctor or pharmacist if in doubt.
Side Effects and Contraindications
Cholagogue tablets are generally well tolerated. However, in rare cases, the following side effects may occur:
- Gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea or diarrhoea
- Allergic reactions to the herbal ingredients (particularly in individuals with known sensitivity to plants from the daisy family, such as artichoke or dandelion)
Cholagogue tablets should not be taken in the following cases:
- Gallstone disease (cholelithiasis) – as increased gallbladder emptying may trigger a gallstone attack
- Obstruction of the bile ducts (cholestasis)
- Severe liver disease
- Known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding, only after consulting a doctor
When to See a Doctor
If you experience persistent or severe upper abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, pale stools, or fever, you should seek medical attention promptly, as these symptoms may indicate serious liver or bile duct conditions. Cholagogue tablets are not a substitute for medical diagnosis and treatment.
