Eyelid correction (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure to correct drooping or puffy eyelids. It improves both the visual field and the overall appearance of the eyes.
What is Eyelid Correction?
Eyelid correction, medically known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed on the eyelids. It involves removing or tightening excess skin, fatty tissue, or weakened muscle around the upper and/or lower eyelids. The procedure can be performed for both functional (medical) and cosmetic reasons.
Causes and Indications
As we age, the skin loses elasticity and the muscles supporting the eyelids weaken. This can lead to drooping upper eyelids (ptosis) or hooded lids that obstruct vision. Common indications include:
- Functional impairment of the visual field due to sagging upper eyelids
- Puffy or swollen lower eyelids (commonly known as under-eye bags)
- Cosmetic desire for a younger or more refreshed appearance
- Congenital eyelid abnormalities or malpositions
Diagnosis and Pre-operative Evaluation
Before the procedure, a thorough examination is conducted by an ophthalmologist or plastic surgeon. The evaluation includes:
- Assessment of skin laxity and fat tissue displacement
- Visual acuity and visual field testing (when medically indicated)
- General health status and identification of contraindications
- Review of current medications (especially blood thinners)
Surgical Procedure
Eyelid correction is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, often combined with mild sedation. Depending on the extent of the procedure, surgery lasts between 30 and 90 minutes.
Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty
In upper eyelid surgery, a fine incision is made along the natural crease of the eyelid. Excess skin and, if necessary, fatty tissue are removed. Once healed, the scar is barely visible within the natural fold.
Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
In lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made either just below the lash line or from the inside (transconjunctival approach). Under-eye bags and excess fatty tissue are reduced, and loose skin is tightened.
Recovery and Healing Process
After surgery, swelling and bruising around the eyelids are normal for one to two weeks. The following measures support recovery:
- Applying cold compresses to the treated area during the first 48 hours
- Keeping the head elevated while sleeping
- Avoiding physical exertion and sun exposure
- Attending regular follow-up appointments with the treating physician
- Refraining from wearing contact lenses for several weeks
The final result is typically visible after three to six months, once all swelling has subsided and scars have faded.
Risks and Complications
As with any surgical procedure, eyelid correction carries certain risks:
- Post-operative bleeding and bruising (hematomas)
- Infection
- Scarring
- Dry eyes or temporary visual disturbances
- Asymmetry of the eyelids
- In rare cases: injury to the optic nerve or vision loss
Choosing an experienced surgeon and undergoing a thorough pre-operative evaluation significantly reduces most of these risks.
Results and Long-term Outcomes
Eyelid correction typically results in a more natural, refreshed, and youthful appearance. When performed for medical reasons, it can also significantly improve the visual field. Results can last for many years or even decades; however, since the natural aging process continues, a repeat procedure may eventually become necessary.
