A distinction is made between the complete blood count (CBC), which includes red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), platelets (thrombocytes), hemoglobin, hematocrit, and related indices, and the differential blood count, which provides a detailed breakdown of the white blood cell subtypes.
Causes
Blood count changes can be triggered by a wide variety of factors:
- Infectious diseases: Bacterial or viral infections frequently lead to an increase or shift in white blood cell counts.

Treatment
Treatment is always directed at the underlying cause of the blood count abnormality:
