How to Use a Blood Lancet
Correct use of a blood lancet is essential to obtain a sufficient blood sample while minimizing discomfort and risk of injury:
- Wash and dry hands thoroughly.
- Insert the lancet into a suitable lancing device (autopuncture device).
- Set the desired puncture depth.
- Disinfect the fingertip (use the side, not the center) and allow it to dry.
- Press the device firmly against the skin and release the trigger.
- Wipe away the first drop of blood; use the second drop for the test.
- Dispose of the used lancet safely in an approved sharps container.
Safety and Hygiene
Since blood lancets come into direct contact with blood, strict hygiene rules apply:
- Each lancet must only be used once.
- Never share lancets with other people -- bloodborne infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV can be transmitted through contaminated needles.
- Used lancets are classified as sharps waste and must be disposed of in approved sharps containers.
Availability and Coverage
Blood lancets are available at pharmacies, medical supply stores, and specialist retailers. For people with diabetes mellitus, lancets and lancing devices are typically covered by statutory health insurance in Germany when prescribed by a physician.
