The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is the European Union's central institution for the scientific assessment of food safety, food supplements and health claims made on foods.
EFSA was founded in 2002 and is based in Parma, Italy. EFSA provides independent scientific opinions that serve as the basis for legal regulations and consumer information in the EU.
One of EFSA's key tasks is the evaluation of health claims that may be used by food manufacturers. These assessments are based on strict scientific criteria and serve to protect consumers from misleading advertising claims. Only when a health claim has been scientifically proven and approved by EFSA can it be used on products.
An example of EFSA's role can be seen in the testing of Spermidine and Lactoferrin. Spermidine, a polyamine with potential cell-regenerating and anti-ageing properties, is the subject of intensive research, but European law requires sound scientific evidence for health claims.
EFSA therefore makes a significant contribution to consumer safety by reviewing scientific evidence and ensuring that food supplements and functional foods offer demonstrable health benefits and comply with legal requirements.
