Types of Immune Cells
The immune system is divided into the innate (non-specific) and adaptive (specific) immune responses. The main types of immune cells include:
- Neutrophils: The most abundant white blood cells; they engulf and destroy pathogens through a process called phagocytosis.
- Macrophages: Large phagocytic cells that clear pathogens and cellular debris while also activating other immune cells.
- Natural Killer (NK) Cells: They identify and kill virus-infected or cancerous cells without prior sensitization.
- T Lymphocytes (T Cells): Central to the adaptive immune response; cytotoxic T cells directly kill infected cells, while helper T cells coordinate broader immune responses.
- B Lymphocytes (B Cells): Produce antibodies that specifically target and neutralize pathogens.
- Dendritic Cells: Present antigens (pathogen recognition markers) to other immune cells, initiating the specific immune response.
Origin and Maturation
All immune cells originate from common precursor cells in the bone marrow. T cells additionally mature in the thymus, a gland located behind the breastbone. After maturation, immune cells migrate to the blood, lymph nodes, spleen, and other tissues, where they are ready to respond to pathogens.
Function in the Immune System
Immune cells work closely together to ensure an effective immune response:
- They recognize foreign structures using specialized receptors on their surface.
- They communicate with each other through signaling molecules called cytokines.
- They form immunological memory, enabling faster and stronger responses upon re-exposure to the same pathogen.
Clinical Relevance
Disorders involving immune cells can lead to serious medical conditions:
- Immunodeficiencies: Too few or dysfunctional immune cells increase susceptibility to infections (e.g., in HIV/AIDS or congenital immune deficiencies).
- Autoimmune diseases: Immune cells mistakenly attack the body's own tissues (e.g., in Rheumatoid Arthritis or Type 1 Diabetes).
- Allergies: Exaggerated immune cell reactions to harmless substances such as pollen or foods.
- Leukemia: Malignant transformation of immune cell precursors in the bone marrow.

Several factors can positively influence immune cell performance:
