Imunaflor is a probiotic dietary supplement designed to support the immune system and promote gut health. It contains live microorganisms that help balance the intestinal flora.
What is Imunaflor?
Imunaflor is a probiotic preparation containing live, health-promoting microorganisms – commonly known as probiotics. It is used as a dietary supplement to support the natural gut flora (microbiome) and strengthen the immune system. The bacterial cultures found in the product, typically from the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, colonize the intestine and help maintain balance within the intestinal ecosystem.
Indications and Uses
Imunaflor is commonly used in the following situations:
- Supporting the immune system, especially during and after antibiotic treatments
- Restoring and stabilizing gut flora after gastrointestinal illnesses
- Preventive use during cold and flu season to strengthen natural defenses
- Promoting digestive health in cases of bloating, diarrhea, or irritable bowel syndrome
- Strengthening the intestinal barrier in individuals with increased susceptibility to infections
Mechanism of Action
The probiotics contained in Imunaflor work on several levels:
Gut Colonization
The live bacterial cultures settle in the large intestine and compete with harmful pathogens for nutrients and adhesion sites on the intestinal mucosa. This inhibits the growth of pathogenic microorganisms.
Immune Modulation
Probiotic bacteria interact directly with the gut-associated immune system (GALT – Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue). They promote the production of immunoglobulin A (IgA), regulate inflammatory responses, and stimulate the activity of immune cells such as macrophages and natural killer cells.
Production of Beneficial Metabolites
Probiotics produce short-chain fatty acids (e.g., butyrate), which nourish the intestinal mucosa and strengthen its barrier function. They also lower the pH in the gut, creating an unfavorable environment for harmful bacteria.
Composition and Dosage
Imunaflor typically contains a combination of several bacterial strains and often includes prebiotics (e.g., inulin or fructooligosaccharides), which serve as a food source for the probiotics and promote their growth. The exact composition and concentration of colony-forming units (CFU) may vary depending on the specific product formulation.
Dosage recommendations should be followed as stated on the product leaflet or as advised by a physician or pharmacist. Imunaflor is generally taken once daily, preferably before or with a meal to improve the survival of the bacteria through the stomach.
Tolerability and Side Effects
Imunaflor is generally considered well tolerated. During the first few days of use, mild bloating or changes in bowel habits may occur as the gut flora adapts to the new bacterial cultures. These symptoms typically resolve within a short time.
Individuals with severely compromised immune systems (e.g., after organ transplantation or during heavy immunosuppressive therapy) should seek medical advice before taking probiotic supplements.
Storage Information
Probiotic preparations such as Imunaflor should be stored according to the manufacturer's instructions. Many formulations require cool and dry storage conditions, as heat and moisture can impair the viability of the bacterial cultures. Some modern formulations, however, are stable at room temperature.
