The acetabulum is the bony cavity in which the spherical head of the femur (femoral head) sits, together forming the hip joint. The incisura acetabuli represents a physiological, naturally occurring interruption in the bony rim of the acetabulum.
This notch is bridged by the transverse acetabular ligament, which closes the gap in the cartilaginous rim and completes the acetabular ring. The resulting canal allows blood vessels and nerve branches to enter the interior of the hip joint, supplying the femoral head and joint structures.
