An infection occurs when pathogens – microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites – enter and multiply within a living host. The human immune system responds to these invaders, which often results in characteristic disease symptoms. Infections are among the most common health conditions worldwide and can affect virtually every organ system in the body.
Causes and Pathogens
Infections are caused by various types of microorganisms:
- Bacteria: Single-celled organisms that can cause conditions such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and urinary tract infections.
- Viruses: Even smaller agents that replicate only inside living cells; examples include influenza, COVID-19, and herpes.
- Fungi: Can cause superficial infections (e.g., athlete's foot) or systemic infections, especially in people with weakened immune systems.
- Parasites: Include protozoa such as plasmodia (the cause of malaria) and worms that can affect various organs.
- Prions: Misfolded proteins responsible for rare but serious diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
Routes of Transmission
Infections can spread through several different pathways:
- Droplet transmission: Spread via coughing, sneezing, or talking (e.g., influenza, COVID-19).
- Contact transmission: Direct skin or mucous membrane contact, or indirect contact through contaminated surfaces or objects.
- Fecal-oral route: Pathogens ingested through contaminated food or water (e.g., Salmonella, hepatitis A).
- Sexual transmission: Spread through sexual contact (e.g., HIV, chlamydia).
- Vector-borne transmission: Transmitted by insects such as mosquitoes or ticks (e.g., malaria, tick-borne encephalitis).
- Blood-to-blood contact: For example, through blood transfusions or shared needles.
Symptoms
The symptoms of an infection depend on the pathogen involved, the organ system affected, and the condition of the immune system. Common general signs include:
- Fever – a defense mechanism of the body to fight pathogens
- Fatigue and general malaise
- Pain (e.g., headache, sore throat, or muscle aches)
- Signs of inflammation such as redness, swelling, or warmth at the site of infection
- Cough, runny nose, diarrhea, or vomiting, depending on the organ system involved
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of an infection is established using several methods:
- Medical history and physical examination: Initial assessment by a physician based on reported symptoms and clinical signs.
- Blood tests: Measurement of inflammatory markers such as CRP (C-reactive protein) and a complete blood count (e.g., elevated white blood cell count as a sign of bacterial infection).
- Microbiological cultures: Isolation and identification of pathogens from swabs, urine, blood, or other body samples.
- PCR testing: Highly sensitive detection of pathogen genetic material, particularly useful for viral infections.
- Serology (antibody testing): Detection of antibodies indicating a current or past infection.
- Imaging: X-ray, ultrasound, or CT scanning when organ involvement is suspected (e.g., pneumonia).
Treatment
Treatment depends on the type of pathogen responsible for the infection:
- Bacterial infections: Treated with antibiotics. Choosing the correct antibiotic and completing the full course is essential to avoid antibiotic resistance.
- Viral infections: Often managed symptomatically (fever reduction, rest, fluids). Specific antiviral medications exist for certain viruses (e.g., oseltamivir for influenza, antiretroviral therapy for HIV).
- Fungal infections: Treated with antifungal agents (e.g., fluconazole).
- Parasitic infections: Managed with specific antiparasitic drugs (e.g., antiprotozoals or anthelmintics).
General Supportive Measures
Regardless of the pathogen, the following measures can support recovery: adequate rest and sleep, high fluid intake, a balanced diet, and the use of fever-reducing or pain-relieving medications when needed.
Prevention
Many infections can be prevented through targeted measures:
- Vaccination: Protection against numerous infectious diseases such as measles, influenza, COVID-19, and hepatitis B.
- Hygiene practices: Regular handwashing, cough and sneeze etiquette, and safe food preparation.
- Condom use: Protection against sexually transmitted infections.
- Mosquito protection: Use of repellents and protective clothing when traveling to high-risk areas.
- Immune system support: Healthy diet, regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, and stress reduction.
