Selank is a synthetic neuropeptide originally developed in Russia. It is used to support the treatment of anxiety disorders and to promote cognitive function.
What is Selank?
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (a peptide composed of seven amino acids) derived from the naturally occurring peptide Tuftsin. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and is approved as an anxiolytic drug in Russia and Ukraine. In most other countries, it is classified primarily as a research compound. Selank is recognized for its anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and nootropic (cognitive-enhancing) properties.
Mechanism of Action
Selank exerts its effects through several biological pathways:
- GABAergic system: Selank modulates the GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) system, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. This modulation contributes to its anxiolytic effects without causing the sedation or dependence typically associated with benzodiazepines.
- Serotonin metabolism: Selank influences serotonin turnover in the brain, contributing to its mood-stabilizing effects.
- BDNF regulation: The substance increases the expression of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), which is critical for neuronal growth, learning, and memory.
- Immunomodulation: As a Tuftsin derivative, Selank possesses immunomodulatory properties and can influence the activity of immune cells.
- Enkephalinase inhibition: Selank inhibits enzymes that break down enkephalins (endogenous pain-relieving peptides), which may contribute to stress reduction.
Medical Use
In Russia and Ukraine, Selank is approved as a nasal spray and used for the following indications:
- Generalized anxiety disorders
- Neurotic and neurasthenia-like conditions
- Stress-related disorders
- Support for mild cognitive impairment
Outside these countries, Selank is primarily used in the context of self-experimentation (biohacking) and research, as it lacks broad regulatory approval.
Dosage and Administration
Selank is primarily available as an intranasal spray, since peptides are broken down by digestive enzymes when taken orally. Dosages used in clinical studies typically range from 400 to 900 micrograms per day, divided into multiple doses. Subcutaneous (under-the-skin) injection forms also exist in the research setting. Self-administration without medical supervision is not recommended.
Safety Profile and Side Effects
Selank is considered well tolerated compared to classical anxiolytics such as benzodiazepines. Reported side effects include:
- Mild irritation of the nasal mucosa (with intranasal use)
- Temporary fatigue or mild sedation
- Headache (rare)
No reports of significant dependence or pronounced tolerance development have been documented so far. However, the available data for a comprehensive safety assessment in the general population is limited, as most studies originate from Russian-language sources and are often small in scale.
Legal Status
Selank is approved as a prescription drug in Russia and Ukraine. In the European Union, the United States, and most other countries, Selank is not approved as a pharmaceutical drug and is traded as an unregulated research compound. Purchase and use may be legally restricted. Those interested should always check the applicable legislation in their country.
Scientific Evidence
The available scientific literature on Selank is predominantly based on preclinical animal studies and a limited number of clinical trials from Russia. These studies suggest anxiolytic and nootropic effects, but are methodologically limited. Independently replicated, large-scale clinical trials meeting Western regulatory standards are currently lacking, which is why Selank is not internationally recognized as an evidence-based standard therapeutic agent.
