Single-cell therapy is a complementary health concept in which living single-celled organisms – mainly microalgae or bacteria – are used to support health and well-being.
What is Single-Cell Therapy?
Single-cell therapy is a complementary and alternative medicine concept in which living unicellular organisms – most commonly microalgae such as Chlorella or Spirulina, but also certain bacteria or yeasts – are used for therapeutic purposes. The term derives from the use of so-called unicellular organisms, meaning life forms that consist of only a single cell. In naturopathic and integrative medicine, single-cell therapy is applied to support various bodily functions and promote overall health.
Mechanism of Action
The precise mechanisms of action depend on the organism used. The following effects are generally discussed in the scientific literature:
- Immune modulation: Certain unicellular organisms such as microalgae contain polysaccharides and other bioactive compounds that can activate or regulate the immune system.
- Detoxification: Organisms like Chlorella are thought to bind heavy metals and other toxins in the gut through their cell wall structures, thereby promoting their elimination.
- Antioxidant activity: Many single-celled organisms are rich in antioxidants such as carotenoids, chlorophyll, and vitamin C, which can neutralize free radicals.
- Nutrient supply: Microalgae provide a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, and fatty acids.
Areas of Application
In complementary and integrative medicine, single-cell therapy is discussed for various indications:
- Support of the immune system
- Detoxification and cleansing of the body
- Promotion of gut health
- Support in cases of chronic fatigue and energy deficiency
- Complementary support during oncological therapies (not curative)
- Promotion of general vitality and well-being
Commonly Used Single-Celled Organisms
Chlorella
Chlorella is a green microalga that is rich in chlorophyll, proteins, B-group vitamins, and minerals. It is commonly available as a dietary supplement in tablet form or as a powder. It is attributed with a detoxifying effect against heavy metals, although scientific evidence for this claim remains limited.
Spirulina
Spirulina is a blue-green alga (cyanobacterium) considered particularly nutrient-dense. It contains high-quality proteins, phycocyanin (a blue pigment with antioxidant properties), iron, vitamin B12 (in a form that is only partially bioavailable for humans), and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Spirulina has a long history of traditional use and is increasingly being studied in clinical research for its potential health benefits.
Other Single-Celled Organisms
In addition to Chlorella and Spirulina, other microorganisms such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast) or probiotic bacterial strains are used in this context to support the gut microbiome and promote overall health.
Scientific Evidence
Scientific research on single-cell therapy is still at an early stage. While antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties have been demonstrated in laboratory studies for individual compounds found in microalgae – such as phycocyanin from Spirulina or chlorophyll from Chlorella – large-scale, randomized controlled trials are still lacking for most clinical applications. Patients should therefore regard single-cell therapy as a complementary measure and by no means as a replacement for conventional medical treatment.
Dosage and Application
Dosage depends on the specific preparation and the manufacturer. Typical dosages for microalgae supplements range from 3 to 10 g per day as a dietary supplement. It is advisable to start with a low dose and gradually increase it to minimize gastrointestinal side effects. Consultation with a physician is strongly recommended, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions, during pregnancy, or when taking medications.
Side Effects and Safety
Single-cell therapy is generally considered well tolerated when used as directed. Possible side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal complaints (bloating, nausea, changes in bowel movements)
- Allergic reactions (particularly in individuals with iodine or seafood allergies)
- Interactions with anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) due to the high vitamin K content of some algae
- Contamination of low-quality products with heavy metals or cyanotoxins
It is important to use only products from certified manufacturers to avoid contamination risks.
