Sunburn is an acute burn of the skin caused by excessive UV radiation from the sun or artificial light sources such as sunbeds.
UVB rays penetrate the upper layers of the skin and damage the DNA of the skin cells, resulting in redness, swelling, pain and, in severe cases, blistering. The symptoms usually appear a few hours after sunbathing and subside after a few days.
Repeated sunburns increase the risk of skin ageing and skin cancer, as the skin cells can be permanently damaged by UV radiation. To protect yourself from sunburn, sunscreens with a high sun protection factor (SPF), protective clothing and avoiding the blazing midday sun are important. After a sunburn, moisturising lotions with aloe vera or panthenol help to soothe the skin, while anti-inflammatory agents such as chamomile compresses or cooling gels can provide relief.Effective sun protection starts not only from the outside, but also from the inside. Antioxidants such as astaxanthin, a powerful carotenoid, can protect skin cells from UV-induced oxidative stress and improve their resistance to sun exposure. Studies show that astaxanthin can improve skin elasticity, reduce moisture loss and reduce inflammation after UV exposure. It helps to protect skin cells from free radicals caused by solar radiation and can therefore minimise sun-induced skin ageing and long-term damage. Vitamin C, Vitamin E and beta-carotene also help to regenerate the skin and minimise cell damage. A diet rich in these protective substances can therefore help to protect the skin from UV damage in the long term.
