What is Heart Disease Prevention?
Heart disease prevention refers to all proactive measures designed to reduce the likelihood of developing cardiovascular conditions or to slow their progression. These conditions include heart attack (myocardial infarction), coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure, and cardiac arrhythmias. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide, making effective prevention a critical public health priority.
Types of Prevention
Heart disease prevention is typically categorized into three levels:
- Primary prevention: Measures taken in healthy individuals to prevent a first cardiovascular event from occurring.
- Secondary prevention: Interventions following an initial cardiovascular event (e.g., after a heart attack) to prevent recurrence.
- Tertiary prevention: Rehabilitation and long-term management to improve quality of life in individuals already living with heart disease.
Risk Factors for Heart Disease
Effective prevention requires an understanding of the key risk factors involved. These are divided into non-modifiable and modifiable factors:

Preventive Measures
Heart-Healthy Diet

The Mediterranean diet is widely recognized by research as particularly cardioprotective.
Regular Physical Activity
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per week for adults. Regular exercise lowers blood pressure, improves lipid profiles, and strengthens the heart muscle.

Regular Medical Check-Ups
Regular medical screenings allow for the early detection and treatment of risk factors such as high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, or diabetes. These include blood pressure measurements, blood tests (lipid panel, fasting blood glucose), and when indicated, an electrocardiogram (ECG) or other diagnostic procedures.
Pharmacological Prevention
In certain high-risk situations, medication may form part of a prevention strategy. This includes antihypertensive drugs, cholesterol-lowering agents (statins), blood sugar-regulating medications, and in select cases, low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) for antiplatelet therapy.
Heart Disease Prevention in High-Risk Groups
Certain population groups benefit especially from targeted preventive measures:
- Individuals with a family history of heart disease (e.g., familial hypercholesterolemia)
- People with diabetes mellitus
- Individuals with existing high blood pressure
- Older adults aged 50 and above
- People with overweight or obesity
