What is a Geriatric Assessment?
The Geriatric Assessment – often referred to as the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) – is a structured, multidimensional diagnostic process designed specifically for older adults. Unlike a standard medical examination, it goes beyond identifying individual diseases and evaluates a patient´s functional abilities, cognitive status, mental health, nutritional state, and social circumstances. The ultimate goal is to develop a personalized care and treatment plan tailored to the needs of older individuals.
Geriatrics – the medical specialty dedicated to the health of older people – relies heavily on this type of assessment because older patients often suffer from multiple simultaneous conditions (multimorbidity) and their care needs extend well beyond what a single diagnosis can capture.
Why is the Geriatric Assessment Important?
As people age, everyday abilities such as walking, dressing, or preparing meals may become more difficult. At the same time, cognitive changes, depression, or social isolation can develop. Standard medical examinations often fail to capture these dimensions adequately. The Geriatric Assessment bridges this gap and helps to:

Components of the Geriatric Assessment

Cognitive Function
Standardized tests are used to evaluate mental performance:
- Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE): A widely used test assessing memory, language, orientation, and arithmetic ability.

Mental Health

Mobility and Fall Risk
Falls are one of the most common causes of injury in older adults. Assessment tools include:

Nutritional Status

How is the Geriatric Assessment Conducted?
The assessment is typically carried out by an interdisciplinary team that may include physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social workers. It takes place in hospital settings, day clinics, or outpatient geriatric facilities.
The process often begins with a brief geriatric screening to determine whether a full assessment is needed. If the screening indicates a need, the various test domains are systematically administered and the results are compiled into a comprehensive clinical profile.
Outcomes and Consequences
Based on the assessment results, an individualized treatment and care plan is developed. This plan may include:
- Initiation of targeted rehabilitation therapy
- Medication review and adjustment (e.g., reducing inappropriate medications)
- Provision of assistive devices (e.g., walkers, grab rails)
- Organization of home care or nursing services
- Referral to social support and community services
