Biochemical Synthesis (Biosynthesis)
Biosynthesis refers to the production of biological molecules within living organisms. These processes occur inside cells and are regulated by enzymes. Key examples include:
- Protein synthesis: Assembly of proteins from amino acids based on genetic instructions encoded in DNA and RNA
- Lipid synthesis: Production of fats and phospholipids, which form essential components of cell membranes

Importance of Synthesis in Medicine
Synthesis processes are relevant across nearly every area of medicine:
- Drug development: Synthetically produced active substances form the foundation of modern pharmacology, including antibiotics, analgesics, and antidiabetic agents.
- Diagnostics: Synthetic reagents and markers are used in laboratory tests and imaging procedures.

Regulation and Disorders of Biosynthesis
Disruptions in biochemical synthesis can lead to serious medical conditions. For example, impaired insulin synthesis results in Type 1 diabetes mellitus, defective collagen synthesis causes connective tissue disorders, and disturbed hemoglobin synthesis leads to forms of anemia. Many medications work by selectively inhibiting or activating specific synthesis pathways -- for instance, statins block cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
Synthesis and Genetics
The regulation of biosynthesis is closely linked to genetics. Genes contain the instructions for enzymes that catalyze synthesis reactions. Mutations in genes can therefore lead to enzyme defects and disrupted synthesis pathways, which may manifest as inherited metabolic disorders.
