What is Copper Sulfate?
Copper sulfate (chemical formula: CuSO₄) is an inorganic compound composed of copper, sulfur, and oxygen. It most commonly occurs as a blue crystalline pentahydrate (CuSO₄ · 5H₂O), also known as blue vitriol or bluestone. The substance is used in agriculture, industry, and to a limited extent in medicine.
Properties and Occurrence
Copper sulfate is a water-soluble, intensely blue salt. It occurs naturally in rare minerals such as chalcanthite, but is predominantly produced industrially. In its anhydrous form, it appears as a white to grey powder and regains its characteristic blue colour upon absorbing water.
Medical Applications
Historical and Current Use
Historically, copper sulfate was used as an emetic (a substance to induce vomiting) in cases of poisoning. This use is no longer recommended due to its own toxicity. Current medical applications include:
- Treatment of copper deficiency: Under strictly controlled conditions, copper sulfate can be administered intravenously to address severe copper deficiency.
- Antidote in phosphorus poisoning: Copper sulfate solutions were historically used in the treatment of white phosphorus exposure.
- Antiseptic use: Dilute solutions have antimicrobial and fungicidal properties.
- Blood density testing: Copper sulfate solutions are used in laboratory settings for rapid blood density screening, such as in donor screening for anaemia.
Veterinary Medicine
In veterinary medicine, copper sulfate is used to treat and prevent copper deficiency in ruminants, and as a footbath solution to manage hoof diseases in cattle and sheep.
Agricultural Use
Copper sulfate is a key ingredient in Bordeaux mixture, a classic fungicide used to combat diseases such as downy mildew in grapevines and other crops. Due to its persistence in soil, agricultural use is regulated in many countries.
Mechanism of Action
The antimicrobial and fungicidal activity of copper sulfate is based on the release of copper ions (Cu²⁺). These ions inhibit enzymes, damage the cell membranes of microorganisms, and cause protein denaturation, ultimately leading to the death of fungi, bacteria, and algae.
Toxicity and Safety
Copper sulfate is toxic to humans when ingested in larger amounts. Symptoms of acute poisoning include:
- Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
- Metallic taste in the mouth
- Diarrhoea (possibly with blue-green discolouration)
- In severe cases: liver and kidney damage, haemolytic anaemia
Chronic exposure can lead to copper accumulation in the liver, similar to the clinical picture seen in Wilson disease. Appropriate protective equipment (gloves, safety goggles) should always be worn when handling copper sulfate.
Food Additive
As a food additive, copper sulfate is approved in the European Union under the designation E 519. It functions as a firming agent and colour stabiliser in strictly limited applications. Permitted maximum levels are tightly regulated.
