Constitutional therapy is a holistic treatment approach that considers the whole person, incorporating individual predispositions as well as physical and psychological characteristics into the healing process.
What is Constitutional Therapy?
Constitutional therapy is a therapeutic concept that views each person as a unique whole, taking into account their physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. Central to this approach is the concept of constitution – the innate and acquired fundamental disposition of an individual that determines their capacity for self-regulation and response. This approach is applied primarily within naturopathy, homeopathy, Traditional European Medicine (TEM), and anthroposophic medicine.
The goal of constitutional therapy is not merely to address individual symptoms, but to strengthen the body long-term self-regulatory capacity and improve overall health.
Foundations and Concept
The concept of constitution traces its roots to ancient medical traditions, including the humoral pathology of Hippocrates, which described four bodily fluids (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile) and their corresponding temperaments (sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric, and melancholic). Constitutional assessment also plays a central role in modern naturopathy and complementary medicine.
- Individual predisposition: Every person has a unique constitution shaped by genetic, epigenetic, and lifestyle factors.
- Holistic perspective: Body, mind, and soul are regarded as a unified whole.
- Regulatory medicine: The aim is to restore disrupted regulatory mechanisms.
Areas of Application
Constitutional therapy is used for a wide range of complaints and conditions, particularly:
- Chronic conditions such as allergies, rheumatic disorders, or fatigue syndromes
- Functional disorders without a clear organic finding
- Recurrent susceptibility to infections
- Psychosomatic conditions
- Preventive health promotion and strengthening of the immune system
Diagnosis in Constitutional Therapy
The diagnosis of an individual constitution is established through a detailed medical history (anamnesis), which considers not only physical symptoms but also personality traits, lifestyle habits, dietary patterns, emotional tendencies, and family medical history. Depending on the therapeutic system, additional diagnostic methods may include:
- Iridology (used in naturopathy)
- Tongue diagnosis (used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and TEM)
- Constitutional typing according to homeopathic principles (e.g., after Samuel Hahnemann or James Tyler Kent)
Therapeutic Methods
Different methods are employed depending on the therapeutic system used:
Homeopathic Constitutional Therapy
In classical homeopathy, a constitutional remedy is selected to match the totality of a patient physical and psychological characteristics. This remedy is intended to activate the body self-healing forces and harmonize the constitution over time.
Naturopathic Approaches
Naturopathic constitutional therapies may include:
- Individualized nutritional therapy tailored to the constitutional type
- Phytotherapy (medicinal plants) to regulate metabolism and immune function
- Hydrotherapy and physical applications to strengthen regulatory capacity
- Lifestyle therapy (Ordnungstherapie): Adjustments to sleep, physical activity, and stress management
Anthroposophic Medicine
In anthroposophic medicine as developed by Rudolf Steiner, the human constitution is divided into four members of the human being (physical body, etheric body, astral body, and ego organization). Therapy targets imbalances among these members and may include eurythmy therapy, art therapy, and specific medicinal preparations.
Scientific Classification
Constitutional therapy belongs to the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Many of its theoretical foundations – particularly those of homeopathy – are not supported by scientific evidence from the perspective of evidence-based medicine. Nevertheless, many patients report positive experiences, especially with chronic and functional complaints. Certain naturopathic aspects of constitutional therapy, such as dietary adjustments and lifestyle changes, do have support from scientific research.
Patients should always regard constitutional therapy as a complementary approach and should not forgo conventional medical evaluation for serious conditions.
