CD13, also known as Aminopeptidase N (APN), is a transmembrane enzyme that occurs on the surface of numerous cell types - in particular on myelocytes, endothelial cells, epithelial cells and tumour cells. It belongs to the family of zinc-dependent metalloproteases and plays an important role in the cleavage of peptides, cell migration, angiogenesis and immune regulation.
tumour tissues, especially in:
- Soft tissue sarcomas
- Colorectal carcinomas
- Lung cancer
- Liver cell carcinoma
target molecule for tumour therapies. In the TRABTRAP study, for example, the tumour-specific peptide tTF-NGR is used, which binds to CD13 to selectively close the tumour vasculature and kill cancer cells through oxygen deprivation.
tumour-associated vascular endothelial cells, but not on normal blood vessels, CD13 provides a platform for targeted drug delivery. Therapeutic substances or nanoparticles are provided with CD13-ligating molecules such as NGR peptides in order to selectively target tumour tissue.
biomolecular marker to identify certain types of cancer or inflammatory conditions.
inflammation, viral infections and autoimmune diseases. For example, it serves as a receptor for certain coronaviruses (not SARS-CoV-2) and is involved in the pathogenesis of some virus-induced diseases.
