Wissenswertes über "E1519"
E1519 (benzyl alcohol) is an approved food additive used as a solvent and flavoring carrier. It occurs naturally in many fruits and floral essential oils.
What Is E1519 (Benzyl Alcohol)?
E1519 is the European Union designation for benzyl alcohol, an aromatic alcohol with the chemical formula C₆H₅CH₂OH. It is classified as an approved food additive and is authorized within the EU primarily as a solvent and carrier substance for flavors and other food additives. Benzyl alcohol is a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic, mildly sweet, pleasant odor.
Natural Occurrence and Origin
Benzyl alcohol is found naturally in a wide variety of foods and plants, including:
- Essential oils such as jasmine, ylang-ylang, and hyacinth
- Fruits such as cherries, apricots, and plums
- Fermented products such as wine and cheese (in trace amounts)
- Cocoa and chocolate
Industrially, benzyl alcohol is predominantly produced synthetically through the hydrolysis of benzyl chloride or by the reduction of benzaldehyde.
Use as a Food Additive
In the food industry, E1519 serves primarily as:
- Solvent: to dissolve flavors, colorants, and other additives
- Carrier substance: to ensure uniform distribution of flavorings throughout a food product
- Flavoring component: to create or enhance sweet, floral, or fruity aroma impressions
Beyond food, benzyl alcohol is widely used in cosmetics (perfumery, shampoos, lotions), in pharmaceuticals (as a solvent and preservative in injectable preparations), and in the coatings and lacquer industry.
Legal Authorization in the EU
E1519 is authorized in the European Union under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. Its use is restricted to specific food categories, primarily as a solvent for flavors and food additives. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated benzyl alcohol and established an acceptable daily intake (ADI) level.
Safety and Tolerability
Benzyl alcohol is rapidly metabolized in the human body to benzoic acid and subsequently to hippuric acid, which is excreted in the urine. At the levels permitted for use in food, E1519 is considered safe for the general population.
However, the following aspects are important to note:
- Allergic reactions: In sensitive individuals, skin irritation or allergic reactions may occur, particularly with frequent contact through cosmetic products.
- Newborns and premature infants: In newborns and premature infants, benzyl alcohol at higher doses (e.g., from pharmaceutical products) may not be metabolized quickly enough, potentially leading to a condition known as gasping syndrome. Benzyl alcohol-containing medications are therefore contraindicated in this patient group.
- High-dose exposure: Large quantities may have central nervous system effects and be irritating; however, the amounts present in food are very small.
Labeling Requirements
When E1519 is present as a functional additive in a food product, it must be declared in the ingredient list in accordance with EU labeling regulations, either as E1519 or as benzyl alcohol. When used solely as a solvent for flavorings, separate declaration may not be required if it is present only in technologically necessary quantities.
