E218 (methylparaben) is a synthetic preservative used in foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals to inhibit the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and moulds.
What is E218?
E218, chemically known as methylparaben (methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate), is a synthetically produced preservative belonging to the paraben family. It is widely used in the food industry, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals to protect products from microbial spoilage. Within the European Union, E218 is regulated as an approved food additive.
Origin and Occurrence
Methylparaben occurs naturally in small amounts in certain fruits, such as blueberries. However, its commercial application relies on synthetically manufactured methylparaben. As a food additive, E218 is primarily found in:
- Jams, jellies, and marmalades
- Table-top sweeteners containing sweetening agents
- Certain beverages and dietary supplements
- Cosmetic products such as creams, lotions, and shampoos
- Pharmaceutical preparations (e.g., ointments, syrups)
Mechanism of Action
Methylparaben acts as an antimicrobial agent by disrupting the cell membranes of bacteria, yeasts, and moulds and inhibiting their metabolism. It is particularly effective against gram-positive bacteria and fungi. Among the parabens, methylparaben has the shortest carbon chain, making it the most water-soluble member of the group.
Safety and Health Assessment
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated methylparaben and established an acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0-10 mg/kg body weight per day for the group comprising methyl- and ethylparaben. When used as intended in food products, E218 is considered safe.
Potential Concerns
Methylparaben has been discussed in scientific literature in relation to potential oestrogenic activity. Laboratory studies have demonstrated weak hormone-like effects; however, regulatory authorities consider the relevance to humans at typical dietary exposure levels to be low. Some experts recommend caution for specific risk groups, such as pregnant women and infants.
Allergic Reactions
A small proportion of the population may experience contact allergies or skin irritation from methylparaben, particularly when used topically in cosmetics. Allergic reactions from food intake are rare but possible.
Legal Regulations in the EU
In the European Union, E218 is approved under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. Its use is restricted to specific food categories and subject to maximum permitted levels. Cosmetic products are governed by the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, which regulates the use of parabens and has banned certain parabens in products intended for children under three years of age.
