What is E236 (Formic Acid)?
E236 is the designation for formic acid (also known as methanoic acid; chemical formula HCOOH) as a permitted food additive in the European Union. It belongs to the category of preservatives and is the simplest naturally occurring carboxylic acid. Its name derives from the Latin word formica, meaning ant, as it was first isolated from red wood ants (Formica rufa).
Natural Occurrence and Production
Formic acid occurs naturally in several sources:
- In the venom of ants and other insects (e.g., bees)
- In stinging nettles, where it causes the characteristic burning sensation
- In small amounts in certain fruits and honey
For industrial purposes, formic acid is produced synthetically, primarily through the reaction of carbon monoxide with sodium hydroxide (the sodium formate process) or as a by-product of acetic acid production.
Function as a Food Additive
As food additive E236, formic acid acts primarily as a preservative. It inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds by lowering the pH of the food product and exerting direct antimicrobial effects, thereby extending shelf life and preventing spoilage.
Mechanism of Action
The antimicrobial activity of formic acid is based on its ability in undissociated form to penetrate the cell membranes of microorganisms. Once inside the cell, it dissociates and lowers the intracellular pH, disrupting vital enzymatic processes and inhibiting or killing the microorganism.
Regulatory Approval and Applications
In the EU, E236 is approved under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. However, its use is restricted to specific food categories. Typical applications include:
- Preservation of fish products and seafood
- Animal feed (particularly silage and fishmeal) – this is its most widespread use
- Certain beverages and fruit products (in some countries)
For food products intended for direct human consumption, E236 is currently not broadly approved within the EU and has limited application in consumer products. Its primary significance lies in animal feed production and various industrial and technical processes.
Safety and Health Assessment
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and other international regulatory bodies have assessed formic acid as safe for human consumption at approved levels. However, at higher concentrations, formic acid can be irritating or corrosive:
- Contact with concentrated formic acid may cause skin and mucous membrane irritation
- Excessive intake may lead to gastrointestinal discomfort
- Individuals with hypersensitivity to organic acids may be more susceptible to adverse effects
Within established acceptable daily intake (ADI) limits, the substance is considered safe. The ADI for formic acid has been designated as not specified by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), indicating no health risk at typical intake levels.
Labelling Requirements
When E236 is used in food products, EU food law requires it to be declared in the ingredient list either as E236 or by its full name formic acid. Consumers can therefore identify this additive on product packaging.
