E306 is a natural food additive based on tocopherols (Vitamin E), used as an antioxidant to protect foods from spoilage caused by oxidation.
What is E306?
E306 is a natural food additive consisting of tocopherols – a group of fat-soluble compounds belonging to the Vitamin E family. In the food industry, it is used as an antioxidant to protect fats and fat-containing products from oxidation, which can cause rancidity and loss of quality. E306 is derived from natural plant sources, particularly from vegetable oils such as sunflower, soybean, or wheat germ oil.
Origin and Production
Unlike the synthetic variants E307 (alpha-tocopherol), E308 (gamma-tocopherol), and E309 (delta-tocopherol), E306 is a naturally sourced tocopherol mixture. It is obtained through physical extraction and distillation from vegetable oils. Due to its natural origin, E306 is also permitted in organically certified food products.
Mechanism of Action
Tocopherols act as free radical scavengers: they neutralize free radicals generated by light, heat, or oxygen that can attack fat molecules in food. This process – known as lipid peroxidation – is inhibited by E306, thereby extending the shelf life and preserving the sensory quality (smell, taste, color) of food products.
Use in Food Products
E306 is used in a wide range of food products, including:
- Edible oils and fats
- Margarine and spreads
- Baby food and infant formula
- Nut products and snacks
- Cosmetic products (outside the food sector)
Since E306 is fat-soluble, it is primarily used in fatty foods and products with a high content of unsaturated fatty acids, which are particularly susceptible to oxidation.
Safety and Health Assessment
E306 is considered safe and well-tolerated. As it consists of naturally occurring Vitamin E, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has not established a specific Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) – an indication of its high safety profile. Tocopherols are not only harmless to the human body but are in fact essential: Vitamin E performs important antioxidant and immunological functions in the body. Only at extremely high intake levels – far beyond normal dietary exposure, such as through high-dose supplements – could potential adverse effects theoretically occur, such as an influence on blood clotting.
Labelling and Regulations
In the European Union, E306 is authorized under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. The additive must be declared on the ingredient list either as E306 or as tocopherols. In organically produced foods, E306 is one of the few additives permitted due to its natural origin.
