E460 is a plant-based food additive derived from cellulose, used as a bulking agent, anti-caking agent, and stabilizer in food products. It is considered safe and approved by the EFSA.
What is E460?
E460 is the European designation for cellulose, a naturally occurring dietary fiber derived from the cell walls of plants. In the food industry, E460 is used as an additive and is divided into two subtypes:
- E460i – Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC): A purified and compacted form of cellulose produced by acid hydrolysis.
- E460ii – Powdered Cellulose: A mechanically milled, fibrous form of cellulose.
Origin and Production
Cellulose is the most abundant organic polymer on Earth and the primary structural component of plant cell walls. For use as a food additive, it is primarily sourced from wood pulp or cotton fibers, which are then refined to achieve a high level of purity.
Functions and Applications
E460 serves several technological functions in food products:
- Bulking agent: Increases the volume of food products without adding calories.
- Anti-caking agent: Prevents food particles from clumping together, for example in grated cheese or spice powders.
- Stabilizer and emulsifier: Improves texture and consistency in processed foods.
- Water retention agent: Binds moisture in baked goods and processed meat products.
- Calorie-reducing filler: Used in low-calorie or high-fiber food products.
Typical food products containing E460 include: pharmaceutical tablets and capsules (as an excipient), grated cheese, baked goods, diet products, dietary supplements, and meat products.
Physiological Effects
The human body cannot digest cellulose because it lacks the necessary enzyme (cellulase). E460 passes through the digestive tract largely undigested, functioning as an insoluble dietary fiber. This produces the following physiological effects:
- Promotion of intestinal peristalsis and improved digestion
- Support of healthy bowel movements
- Satiety without caloric intake
- Potential positive effect on blood sugar levels through slowed absorption
Safety and Regulatory Status
E460 is authorized in the European Union under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated cellulose as safe for use in food. No Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) has been established, meaning the substance is considered safe at typical consumption levels. The WHO and FAO also classify cellulose as a safe food additive.
Possible Side Effects
No harmful effects are known at normal consumption levels. At very high intakes, as with other dietary fibers, symptoms such as bloating, flatulence, or changes in bowel habits may occur. Individuals with pre-existing gastrointestinal conditions should consult a healthcare professional if significantly increasing their fiber intake.
