E530 refers to magnesium oxide, an inorganic compound composed of magnesium and oxygen. As an approved food additive in the European Union, E530 is primarily used as an anticaking agent and acidity regulator. It appears as a fine, white powder that occurs naturally as the mineral periclase and is commercially produced by calcining magnesium carbonate or magnesium hydroxide.
Use in Food Products
In the food industry, E530 serves several technological functions:
- Anticaking agent: Prevents powdered foods such as cocoa, table salt, or spices from clumping together.
- Acidity regulator: Neutralizes acids and helps stabilize the pH value in certain food products.
- Colour stabilizer: Can contribute to colour retention in some applications.
Typical food products in which E530 may be used include cocoa powder, milk powder, dietary supplements, and various dry mixes.
Safety and Health Assessment
Magnesium oxide is considered a safe food additive. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has assessed E530 as safe for use in food. Since magnesium is an essential mineral for the human body, E530 can simultaneously serve as a source of dietary magnesium.
In large quantities – which would not occur through normal food consumption – magnesium oxide may have a laxative effect. Individuals with impaired kidney function should consult a healthcare professional regarding high magnesium intake.
Labelling and Regulation
In the EU, E530 is authorised under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. On product labels, it is listed either as E530 or under the name magnesium oxide. The permitted maximum level follows the quantum satis principle, meaning it is used at the lowest amount necessary to achieve the desired technological effect.
Comparison with Other Magnesium Additives
In addition to E530, several other magnesium compounds are approved as food additives, including:
- E511 – Magnesium chloride
- E470b – Magnesium salts of fatty acids
- E343 – Magnesium phosphates
