E553a is an approved food additive (magnesium silicate) used as an anti-caking agent and release agent in a variety of food products.
What is E553a?
E553a refers to magnesium silicate, an inorganic food additive officially approved in the European Union. It is a synthetically produced or naturally occurring compound made up of magnesium and silicon dioxide. In the food industry, E553a is primarily used as an anti-caking agent and release agent to prevent powdered or granulated foods from clumping together.
Use in Food Products
E553a is used in a wide range of processed foods. Common applications include:
- Seasoning blends and spice powders
- Powdered foods such as dried milk or instant coffee
- Salt substitutes and table salt
- Confectionery and chewing gum
- Dietary supplements in tablet form (as an excipient)
Due to its physical properties -- particularly its large surface area and ability to absorb moisture -- E553a keeps powders free-flowing and prevents clumping during storage and processing.
Mechanism of Action
Magnesium silicate acts as an anti-caking agent by inserting itself between individual particles of a powder, preventing them from sticking together. It can also absorb moisture, which further reduces the clumping of hygroscopic (moisture-attracting) food products. As a release agent, it prevents food from sticking to processing machinery or packaging materials.
Safety and Health Assessment
E553a has been evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). When used as intended and within established maximum levels, the substance is considered safe for human consumption. Magnesium silicate is barely absorbed by the body and is largely excreted unchanged.
For particularly sensitive groups -- such as individuals with impaired kidney function -- elevated magnesium intake may be relevant in general, but the amounts absorbed through food additives are typically very low. No known allergic reactions to E553a have been documented.
ADI Value
EFSA has not established a specific ADI value (Acceptable Daily Intake) for magnesium silicate (E553a), as the substance is considered safe and the actual intake from food is regarded as very low.
Legal Framework in the EU
The use of E553a in the EU is regulated by Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. The permitted maximum levels vary depending on the food category. In some categories, the so-called quantum satis principle applies, meaning the additive may only be used in the amount technically necessary to achieve its intended purpose.
Labelling
When E553a is added to a food product, it must be declared in the ingredient list in accordance with EU labelling regulations, either as E553a or under its chemical name magnesium silicate.
