E650 is the EU food additive code for zinc acetate, a zinc salt of acetic acid. It is used as a flavoring agent and food additive while also providing the essential trace element zinc.
What is E650 (Zinc Acetate)?
E650 refers to zinc acetate, a salt composed of zinc and acetic acid. Within the European Union, it is approved as a food additive and is primarily used as a flavoring substance and as a source of the essential trace element zinc. Chemically known as zinc(II) acetate, it has the molecular formula Zn(CH₃COO)₂.
Uses in Food
Zinc acetate (E650) is primarily used in the food industry as a flavoring agent, imparting a slightly astringent, metallic taste. It also serves as a zinc fortification agent in dietary supplements, fortified foods, and infant formula. Key applications include:
- Fortification of foods and dietary supplements with zinc
- Use as a preservative aid in certain food categories
- Incorporation into medicated lozenges and throat sprays for zinc supplementation
- Use as a processing aid in food manufacturing
Biological Functions of Zinc
Zinc is an essential trace element that the human body cannot produce on its own and must therefore obtain through the diet. Zinc performs numerous vital functions in the body:
- Supporting the immune system and immune defense
- Participating in more than 300 enzymatic reactions
- Promoting wound healing and tissue repair
- Playing a key role in growth and development, especially in children
- Contributing to normal DNA synthesis and cell division
- Protecting cells against oxidative stress
- Supporting normal fertility and reproduction
Safety and Tolerability
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has assessed zinc acetate as a safe food additive when used within approved quantities. The tolerable upper intake level for zinc, as established by EFSA, is 25 mg per day for adults. Excessive zinc intake may cause the following adverse effects:
- Nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort
- Copper deficiency with long-term overdose, as zinc inhibits copper absorption
- Headaches and dizziness at very high doses
When used as intended and in customary amounts, E650 is considered well-tolerated and safe.
Zinc Acetate in Medicine
Beyond its role as a food additive, zinc acetate is also used medicinally. It is approved as a pharmaceutical agent for the treatment of Wilson's disease, a rare genetic disorder in which copper accumulates in organs. In this context, zinc acetate inhibits copper absorption in the intestine. It is also a common active ingredient in cold lozenges, as zinc ions can inhibit the replication of rhinoviruses.
Labeling and Regulation
In the EU, E650 is regulated under Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008 on food additives. It must be listed in the ingredients of food products either under its name zinc acetate or its additive code E650. In dietary supplements, it is commonly declared as a zinc source.
