Carnauba wax is not meaningfully absorbed by the human digestive system and is excreted unchanged. It is therefore considered physiologically inert, meaning it produces no biological effect within the body.
Allergic reactions to E903 are extremely rare and barely documented in scientific literature. No known interactions with medications or other nutrients have been reported.
Labelling and Regulation
In the European Union, E903 is approved under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. Foods treated with carnauba wax must display the indication glazing agent along with the name carnauba wax or the E-number E903 on the packaging.
