Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is a stable, non-flammable gas with good fat solubility, making it well suited as a propellant for cream-based products. Health Considerations
When used as intended in food applications, E942 is considered safe. However, the following points are worth noting:
- Recreational misuse: Nitrous oxide is increasingly misused as a recreational drug (so-called laughing gas cartridges). This can cause serious health consequences, including oxygen deprivation, nerve damage (through inhibition of vitamin B12 activation), and in extreme cases, death.
- Occupational exposure: Chronic exposure to high concentrations of N₂O -- as may occur in medical or dental settings -- has been associated with an increased risk of neurological damage and reproductive issues.
- Food safety: The trace amounts of N₂O remaining in food after proper use are minimal and pose no known health risk to consumers.
Labelling
Foods containing E942 must list it in their ingredient declaration, either as E942 or as nitrous oxide. There are no specific allergen or intolerance labelling requirements associated with this additive.
