What is E943a?
E943a refers to the food additive isobutane (also known as 2-methylpropane), a colorless and odorless gas belonging to the hydrocarbon group of alkanes. In the food industry, E943a is used exclusively as a propellant gas, for example in whipped cream sprays and other aerosol-based food products. It is classified as a processing aid and has no nutritional function.
Chemical Properties
Isobutane is a saturated hydrocarbon (alkane) with the molecular formula C₄H₁₀. It is an isomer of n-butane and exists as a gas at room temperature. Its low boiling point and suitable pressure characteristics make it technically well-suited for use as a propellant in aerosol containers. E943a is odorless in food applications and does not affect the taste or texture of the product.
Use in Food Products
E943a is approved as a food additive in the European Union and is governed by Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. Typical applications include:
- Whipped cream and other spray products
- Aerosol food packaging
- Plant-based cooking sprays
The permitted quantity is governed by the quantum satis principle, meaning only as much may be used as is technologically necessary.
Safety and Health Assessment
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated isobutane as a food additive. When used as intended as a propellant gas, E943a is considered safe, as the amount of the substance actually ingested by the consumer is extremely small. The gas largely escapes upon opening the container and barely enters the food itself.
However, isobutane is highly flammable and is therefore used only in sealed aerosol containers for safety reasons. Direct contact with the pure gas should be avoided.
Labeling
Food products containing E943a must declare this additive in the ingredient list, either under the name isobutane or with the E-number E943a. This enables consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.
