What Are Endorphins?
Endorphins are natural chemical messengers produced by the brain and nervous system. The term is a combination of endogenous (meaning produced within the body) and morphine (a well-known pain-relieving drug). Endorphins belong to the group of endogenous opioids – naturally occurring substances that act similarly to morphine but are produced by the body itself.
Function and Mechanism of Action
Endorphins bind to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord. This binding inhibits the transmission of pain signals and triggers feelings of relaxation and well-being. The phenomenon is often referred to as the endorphin rush or runner's high – a sense of euphoria that can occur after intense physical exercise.

Types of Endorphins

- Alpha-endorphin and gamma-endorphin: Less potent variants whose exact functions are still being researched.
- Enkephalins and dynorphins: Other endogenous opioids closely related to endorphins with similar effects.
