Haemorrhoids are dilated vascular cushions in the rectum that play an important role in the fine sealing of the anus.
When haemorrhoids become enlarged or inflamed, symptoms such as itching, burning, pain, oozing or bleeding during bowel movements can occur. In advanced stages, prolapse of the haemorrhoids can also occur, which severely impairs everyday life. The main cause of haemorrhoidal disease is increased pressure in the area of the anal canal, which is promoted by various factors such as chronic constipation, a low-fibre diet, prolonged sitting, obesity, genetic predisposition or pregnancy.
Treatment depends on the severity. In the early stages, conservative measures are usually sufficient. A diet rich in fibre with sufficient liquid improves stool consistency and reduces straining during bowel movements. Ointments and suppositories with anti-inflammatory or local anaesthetic agents can relieve itching and inflammation in the short term. Sitz baths with chamomile or oak bark have a calming and decongestant effect. In more advanced stages, minimally invasive procedures such as sclerotherapy, in which a solution is injected into the affected vessels, or rubber band ligation, in which the tissue dies by strangulation, can be used. In severe cases, surgical intervention is required, for example a classic haemorrhoidectomy or stapler haemorrhoidopexy.
In addition to these classic treatment approaches, certain dietary supplements can have a supportive effect. Diosmin and hesperidin are flavonoids that have been shown to improve vein function and reduce inflammation. Horse chestnut extract with the active ingredient aescin has a vascular-sealing and anti-inflammatory effect, which improves blood circulation and reduces swelling. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids contributes to collagen formation and strengthens the elasticity of the blood vessel walls. Fibre supplements such as flea seed husks support a soft stool consistency and prevent constipation. Omega-3 fatty acids and curcumin have an anti-inflammatory effect and can relieve pain and swelling. Healthy intestinal flora also plays an important role, which is why probiotics can regulate digestion and reduce the risk of constipation and associated haemorrhoids.
Haemorrhoids are a widespread but often taboo condition. Early treatment with a combination of dietary changes, suitable dietary supplements and targeted therapy can alleviate symptoms and avoid surgical interventions. If you take preventative measures to ensure a high-fibre diet, sufficient exercise and good bowel health, you can significantly reduce the risk of haemorrhoidal disease.
