The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a classic, straightforward inflammatory parameter. It measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a test tube. An elevated ESR indicates inflammation but has limited specificity on its own.
C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein produced by the liver that rises rapidly and significantly during inflammation. It is one of the most sensitive and widely used inflammatory markers. Elevated CRP levels occur in both acute infections and chronic inflammatory conditions.
High-Sensitivity CRP (hsCRP)
High-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) measures very low concentrations of CRP and is primarily used to assess cardiovascular risk. Even slightly elevated values may indicate an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
Complete Blood Count and Differential
A complete blood count (CBC) provides important clues about inflammation: elevated white blood cell counts (leukocytes) suggest bacterial infection, while specific changes in the differential blood count -- such as increased neutrophils or eosinophils -- can point to particular inflammatory causes.
Procalcitonin (PCT)
Procalcitonin is a marker that rises sharply during severe bacterial infections and sepsis. It helps distinguish bacterial from viral infections and supports more targeted antibiotic use.
Interleukin-6 (IL-6)
Interleukin-6 is a pro-inflammatory signaling protein (cytokine) that is elevated in both acute and chronic inflammation. It is increasingly used in intensive care medicine and in the monitoring of autoimmune diseases.
Ferritin
Ferritin is an iron storage protein that also functions as an acute-phase reactant. Markedly elevated ferritin levels can indicate severe inflammation, infection, or certain rheumatological conditions.
Antibody Tests and Autoimmune Markers
When autoimmune disease is suspected, specific antibodies are measured, such as rheumatoid factor (RF), antinuclear antibodies (ANA), or anti-CCP antibodies. These help classify specific inflammatory conditions more precisely.
