Media addiction refers to a behavioural addiction in which the use of digital media such as smartphones, social networks, video games or streaming services gets out of control and severely affects everyday life. Obwohl Medienkonsum in der heutigen Zeit normal und allgegenwärtig ist, kann er in bestimmten Fällen pathologische Züge annehmen – besonders wenn Kontrollverlust, neglect of social contacts, loss of performance or emotional dependence.
Children, adolescents and young adults are most frequently affected, although more and more adults are also exhibiting addiction-like behaviour. Symptomatic media addiction often manifests itself through excessive screen time, irritability during withdrawal, sleep disorders, neglect of duties or social isolation. Particularly risky are online games, social media platforms, short video content and algorithmically optimised apps, which use reward systems to specifically activate the dopamine system and can be addictive in a similar way to substances
.The treatment of media addiction requires an individualised and holistic approach. Central measures are reflection on media use, practising alternative behaviour patterns, promoting real social contacts, structured daily routines and - depending on the severity - psychotherapeutic support. In severe cases, behavioural therapy programmes, digital withdrawal strategies or accompanying measures such as mindfulness training, sport and experiencing nature help to strengthen the connection to real life again.
