What is MOTS-c?
MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA Type-c) is a short peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome. Consisting of just 16 amino acids, it is expressed predominantly in skeletal muscle, the liver, and other tissues. MOTS-c belongs to a class of signaling molecules known as mitokines -- bioactive peptides secreted by mitochondria that exert wide-ranging regulatory effects throughout the body.
Mechanism of Action
MOTS-c activates the AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) signaling pathway, a central cellular energy sensor. Through this mechanism, it influences glucose and lipid metabolism, enhances insulin sensitivity, and supports mitochondrial biogenesis.
