Structure and Notation of a Gene Locus
The notation of a gene locus follows a standardized system. It indicates the chromosome number, the chromosomal arm (short arm = p, long arm = q), and the specific band and sub-band number, which are made visible through special staining techniques.
For example, the gene locus 17q21.31 means:
- Chromosome 17

Alleles and the Gene Locus
