What Are Intestinal Villus Images?
Intestinal villus images are microscopic or endoscopic photographs of the small intestinal mucosa that visualize the intestinal villi (Villi intestinales). These finger-like projections of the mucosal lining are essential for nutrient absorption in the human body. Intestinal villus images are used in medical diagnostics, education, and research to assess the health or disease of the small intestinal mucosa.
Anatomy and Function of Intestinal Villi
Intestinal villi are located in the small intestine and significantly increase the surface area of the intestinal mucosa. Each villus is covered with specialized epithelial cells (enterocytes) that bear fine microvilli forming the brush border. This structure expands the absorptive surface of the small intestine to up to 250 square meters.
- Absorption of nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats
- Uptake of vitamins and minerals
- Barrier function against pathogens
- Immunological defense via the gut-associated lymphoid tissue
How Are Intestinal Villus Images Obtained?
Histological Specimens
Most commonly, intestinal villus images are obtained through biopsy. During an upper endoscopy (gastroscopy) or small bowel endoscopy, the physician collects small tissue samples from the small intestinal mucosa. These samples are then processed in the laboratory, stained (e.g., with hematoxylin and eosin staining), and examined under a microscope.
Endoscopic Images
Modern endoscopic techniques such as capsule endoscopy or confocal laser endomicroscopy allow real-time, high-resolution visualization of intestinal villi without the need for conventional biopsy.
Clinical Significance of Intestinal Villus Images
Intestinal villus images play a central role in diagnosing various conditions. Changes in villus architecture provide important clues about the health of the intestinal mucosa.
Celiac Disease
In celiac disease (gluten intolerance), intestinal villus images typically reveal villous atrophy – the villi appear flattened or are completely absent. This results in impaired nutrient absorption. The severity is classified according to the Marsh classification.
Crohn Disease
In Crohn disease, intestinal villus images may show inflammatory changes, granulomas, and mucosal damage that are characteristic of this chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
Tropical Sprue and Other Malabsorption Syndromes
In other conditions associated with impaired nutrient uptake, intestinal villus images also provide crucial diagnostic information.
Interpreting Intestinal Villus Images
The assessment of intestinal villus images is carried out by specialized pathologists or gastroenterologists. The following parameters are evaluated:
- Villus height: Normal villi are slender and finger-shaped.
- Crypt architecture: Changes in the crypts (Lieberkuhn crypts) indicate inflammation.
- Intraepithelial lymphocytes: An increased count suggests immunological reactions.
- Mucosal thickness: Atrophy or hypertrophy provides clues about underlying disease.
