The azerola is a nutrient-rich fruit from the Mediterranean region, well known for its high vitamin C content and its potential health-promoting properties.
What is Azerola?
The azerola (botanical name: Crataegus azarolus) is a small, red to orange-coloured drupe native to the Mediterranean region, North Africa, and the Middle East. It belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae) and is also known as the azarole or Mediterranean medlar. The fruits have a pleasant sweet-tart flavour and have been used for centuries as both a food source and in traditional folk medicine.
Nutritional Profile and Bioactive Compounds
The azerola fruit boasts an impressive nutritional profile:
- Vitamin C: Azerola contains remarkably high levels of ascorbic acid, which supports the immune system and acts as a powerful antioxidant.
- Flavonoids and Polyphenols: These secondary plant compounds have anti-inflammatory and cell-protective properties.
- Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene): Essential for vision and skin health.
- Minerals: Calcium, potassium, iron, and magnesium are all present in the fruit.
- Dietary Fibre: Promotes healthy digestion and supports gut health.
- Organic Acids: Such as malic acid and citric acid, which contribute to the fresh taste.
Potential Health Benefits
Immune Support and Antioxidant Protection
Thanks to its high vitamin C content, azerola may help strengthen the immune system and counteract oxidative stress. Antioxidants neutralise free radicals and may thus contribute to the prevention of chronic diseases.
Cardiovascular Health
The flavonoids and polyphenols found in azerola have been associated in research with positive effects on the cardiovascular system. They may help regulate blood pressure and protect blood vessel walls.
Anti-Inflammatory Effects
Traditionally, azerola was used for inflammatory complaints. Scientific investigations suggest that certain polyphenols can inhibit inflammatory processes in the body.
Digestion and Gut Health
The dietary fibre in azerola supports digestive activity and may be helpful for mild digestive discomfort.
Typical Serving Sizes and Uses
Azerola is consumed fresh, as jam, in syrups, as tea, or in the form of dietary supplements (extract, powder). A typical serving of fresh fruit is approximately 50–100 g. When taken as a supplement, the recommended daily dose varies by product and concentration; manufacturer instructions should always be followed.
Scientific Evidence
Initial laboratory studies and smaller clinical investigations provide indications of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of azerola. However, many of the proposed health benefits are still based on traditional knowledge and preclinical studies. Comprehensive randomised clinical trials in humans remain limited. Azerola is considered a safe food, and serious side effects are not known with normal dietary consumption.
Safety and Interactions
Azerola is considered safe when consumed as a normal food. At very high doses of vitamin-C-rich extracts, gastrointestinal discomfort may occasionally occur. People taking blood-thinning medications or suffering from certain kidney conditions should seek medical advice before regularly taking high-dose extracts.
