Supportive Therapy in Oncology
In cancer medicine, supportive therapy plays a particularly important role. Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or immunotherapy can cause significant side effects. Supportive care helps manage these side effects so that patients are able to continue and complete their necessary treatment. Examples include antiemetics, growth factors to stimulate blood cell production, and medications to protect the mucous membranes.
Distinction from Palliative Therapy
Supportive and palliative care are often used interchangeably, but they differ in their primary goals. Palliative care is mainly directed at patients with incurable diseases and focuses on quality of life in the final stages of illness. Supportive care, by contrast, accompanies patients at any stage of disease -- including when a cure is still being pursued. Supportive measures can therefore be applied alongside curative (healing-focused) treatment.
