Beyond research, the word significant is also used in everyday clinical medicine to highlight an important finding. For instance, a physician might refer to a significant stenosis (narrowing of a blood vessel) to indicate that the degree of narrowing requires clinical attention and possible treatment. In this context, the term is used more informally but still with medical precision.
Common Misconceptions
A frequent misconception is that statistically significant results are automatically important or conclusive. In reality, the validity and relevance of a result depend on many additional factors, including study design quality, sample size, and the reproducibility of findings across multiple studies.
