E210 is the EU approval number for benzoic acid, a permitted food additive used as a preservative. It inhibits the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and moulds in food and beverages.
What is E210?
E210 is the European approval number for benzoic acid, an organic acid found naturally in certain fruits, berries, and spices. As a food additive, it is synthetically produced and used as a preservative to extend the shelf life of food products and beverages.
Uses and Applications
Benzoic acid (E210) is most commonly used in acidic foods and drinks, as it is most effective at low pH levels (below pH 4.5). Typical applications include:
- Soft drinks and fruit juices
- Acidic sauces, dressings, and marinades
- Delicatessen products such as mayonnaise and prepared salads
- Jams and preserves
- Pickled vegetables
Mechanism of Action
Benzoic acid exerts its antimicrobial effect by penetrating microbial cell membranes in its undissociated (non-ionised) form. Once inside the cell, it disrupts key metabolic enzymes involved in energy production and lowers the intracellular pH, effectively preventing the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and moulds.
Regulatory Status and Acceptable Daily Intake
E210 is approved for use in the European Union under Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008 on food additives. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 5 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. Food manufacturers are required to declare E210 on the ingredient list of products in which it is used.
Safety and Potential Intolerances
In sensitive individuals, benzoic acid may trigger adverse reactions. Known effects include:
- Pseudo-allergic reactions: Skin rash, urticaria (hives), or asthma-like symptoms in sensitive individuals
- Interaction with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C): When combined with preservative E211 (sodium benzoate) and Vitamin C, benzene -- a potentially carcinogenic compound -- may form under certain conditions
- Hyperactivity in children: Research suggests that combinations of certain food additives, including benzoates, may influence activity levels and attention in children
Individuals with known hypersensitivity to benzoic acid or salicylates are advised to avoid products containing E210.
Natural Sources
Benzoic acid occurs naturally in small amounts in foods such as cranberries, blueberries, plums, cinnamon, and cloves. However, the naturally occurring concentrations in these foods are far below the maximum levels permitted for use as a food additive.
