Complementary and Naturopathic Approaches

- Infrared sauna: Claimed to promote excretion of pollutants through sweat. The overall impact on detoxification has not been conclusively evaluated by science.
- Herbal support: Chlorella algae, coriander, and milk thistle are traditionally used to support liver detoxification and heavy metal excretion. Clinical evidence remains limited.
- High-fiber diet: May help promote the excretion of certain pollutants via the intestines.
- Fasting and cleansing regimens: Promoted for general detoxification, but robust scientific evidence is lacking.
Symptoms of Pollutant Exposure
Elevated exposure to environmental toxins can cause a range of complaints, which are often non-specific and may have other causes as well:
- Chronic fatigue and exhaustion
- Difficulty concentrating and memory problems
- Headaches
- Gastrointestinal complaints
- Immune system disturbances (increased susceptibility to infections)
- Skin and mucous membrane irritation

Diagnosing Environmental Toxin Exposure
The diagnosis of clinically relevant environmental toxin exposure should always be made by a physician. Several diagnostic tests are available:
- Blood tests: Measurement of heavy metal concentrations in the blood (e.g., lead, mercury)
- Urine analysis: Assessment of heavy metal and pollutant excretion in urine
- Hair analysis: Can provide indications of long-term exposure, although its diagnostic value remains controversial
- Tissue biopsies: Used in specific cases to determine organ accumulation
Safety Considerations and Risks
Not all methods of environmental toxin elimination are without risk. Chelation therapy in particular is a medical procedure that should only be performed in cases of confirmed heavy metal poisoning and under close medical supervision, as it carries its own risks (e.g., kidney damage, electrolyte imbalances). Self-treatment without a proper medical diagnosis and supervision is not recommended.
Many detoxification products marketed online lack sufficient scientific backing. In cases of doubt, a qualified physician should always be consulted.
