What is Euthymia?
Euthymia describes a psychologically balanced and stable mood state that is neither characterized by depressive episodes nor by manic or hypomanic phases. The term derives from the Greek words eu (good, well) and thymos (soul, spirit). In psychiatry and clinical psychology, euthymia is regarded as the reference state of emotional health and is the primary goal of many psychiatric treatments, particularly in the context of bipolar disorder and major depression.
Clinical Significance in Psychiatry
In clinical practice, euthymia is most commonly used to describe the course of affective disorders. In conditions such as bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder, episodes of illness (e.g., manic or depressive phases) alternate with euthymic intervals. During a euthymic phase, the patient displays a mood within the normal range; however, this does not necessarily mean complete absence of all symptoms.

Bipolar Disorder
In bipolar disorder, euthymia is the target outcome of long-term pharmacological treatment. Mood-stabilizing medications such as lithium, valproate, or lamotrigine aim to prolong euthymic periods and prevent relapses into manic or depressive episodes. Even during euthymic states, some individuals may continue to experience subtle cognitive difficulties or subclinical symptoms.
Depression
In the treatment of depression, returning to euthymia is a central therapeutic objective. Full remission is considered achieved when a patient remains in a sustained euthymic state with no clinically significant depressive symptoms remaining.
Euthymia-Based Therapeutic Approaches
Modern psychotherapy includes specific approaches designed to promote and stabilize euthymia. The most well-known is euthymic therapy, developed by Rainer Lutz, which focuses on building positive experiences and the capacity for enjoyment. The goal is to help patients consciously perceive and cultivate positive emotions in order to foster psychological stability.

Distinguishing Euthymia from Related Concepts
Euthymia should not be confused with euphoria, which describes an excessively elevated, often pathological mood state. Euthymia represents the healthy midpoint on this emotional spectrum.
Diagnostic Assessment
In psychiatric diagnostics, a patient's mood state is systematically assessed using standardized rating scales. Euthymia is evaluated through tools such as the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), and the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). Low total scores on these instruments are consistent with a euthymic state.
