Iron deficiency occurs when the body does not have enough iron available to fulfil important functions.
Iron deficiency occurs when the body does not have enough iron to fulfil important functions, in particular the formation of haemoglobin, the iron-containing protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood. A lack of iron often leads to iron deficiency anaemia, in which the red blood cells do not contain enough haemoglobin to meet the body's oxygen requirements. Causes of iron deficiency can be an unbalanced diet, increased iron requirements (e.g. during pregnancy), chronic blood loss or disorders of iron absorption. Typical symptoms of iron deficiency include tiredness, paleness, brittle nails, hair loss, dizziness and shortness of breath. To prevent or treat iron deficiency, an iron-rich diet (e.g. meat, pulses, nuts) or iron supplements are often recommended.
