Laboratory diagnostics is a fundamental pillar of modern medicine. It involves the systematic examination of biological specimens – including blood, urine, stool, tissue samples, and swabs – in order to obtain information about a patient´s health status. The results help physicians detect diseases, monitor their progression, and evaluate the success of treatments.
Laboratory tests are indispensable in clinical practice: they underpin the majority of all medical diagnoses and therapeutic decisions.
Fields of Laboratory Diagnostics
Laboratory diagnostics is divided into several specialized disciplines, each addressing different clinical questions:
- Clinical Chemistry: Measurement of metabolic parameters such as blood glucose, liver enzymes, kidney function markers, electrolytes, and blood lipids.
- Hematology: Analysis of blood cells, including full blood count, hemoglobin, white blood cells, and platelets.
- Microbiology: Detection of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, for example in infectious diseases.
- Immunology and Serology: Determination of antibodies, inflammatory markers, and autoimmune parameters.

- Urinalysis: Analysis of urine for protein, glucose, blood, or microorganisms.
- Pathology and Histology: Microscopic examination of tissue samples, e.g., for tumor diagnosis.
The Laboratory Testing Process
A typical laboratory examination involves the following steps:
- Sample collection: Blood draw, urine sample, swab, or biopsy – depending on the clinical question.
- Transport and storage: The sample is transported to the laboratory under defined conditions to prevent any alteration of results.
- Analysis: Automated or manual measurement of the requested parameters using specialized instruments and reagents.
- Quality control: Verification of results for plausibility and accuracy.
- Reporting: Results are communicated to the treating physician and interpreted within the clinical context.
When Is Laboratory Diagnostics Used?
Laboratory tests are applied in many clinical situations:
- For early detection of diseases such as diabetes, renal insufficiency, or thyroid disorders.
- To confirm a diagnosis when a clinical suspicion exists.
- For monitoring the course of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or heart failure.
- For therapy monitoring, for example when adjusting anticoagulant therapy or tracking tumor markers.
- As part of preventive health check-ups and wellness screenings.
- In acute illnesses or emergencies, e.g., to detect a myocardial infarction (troponin) or sepsis.
Reference Values and Interpretation
Laboratory results are compared against reference ranges, which indicate the values typically found in healthy individuals. Deviations above or below these ranges may indicate a disease, but must always be interpreted in the context of clinical symptoms and additional findings.
Important: A single laboratory value outside the reference range does not necessarily indicate a serious illness. Interpretation is always the responsibility of the treating physician.
Quality Assurance in Laboratory Diagnostics
Laboratories are legally required to comply with strict quality standards. International guidelines, such as those issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 15189), define requirements for the competence and quality of medical laboratories. Regular internal and external quality controls ensure that results are reliable and comparable across institutions.
