A lactate step test is used to determine the individual anaerobic threshold – the point at which the body produces more lactate than it can clear. Based on this data, training plans can be optimized and endurance performance systematically improved.
How the Lactate Step Test Works
During a step test, the workload is incrementally increased (e.g., on a treadmill or cycle ergometer). After each stage, a small blood sample is taken and the lactate value is measured. The resulting data is plotted as a lactate performance curve, which enables precise training control.
Clinical Significance of Elevated Lactate Levels
