A thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera – called a laparoscope – is inserted through one of these incisions, providing a live video feed of the internal organs on a monitor. This approach is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
How Does Laparoscopy Work?
At the start of the procedure, the abdominal cavity is inflated with carbon dioxide gas (CO₂) to create space and improve visibility. The laparoscope is then inserted through a small incision near the navel. The camera transmits high-definition images to a monitor, allowing the surgical team to navigate and operate with precision. Additional small incisions may be made to insert specialized surgical instruments when treatment is required.
When is Laparoscopy Used?
Laparoscopy is performed across a wide range of medical specialties and indications:
- Diagnostics: Investigation of unexplained abdominal pain, suspected endometriosis, tumors, or adhesions
- Gynecology: Treatment of endometriosis, removal of fibroids, ectopic pregnancy
- General surgery: Removal of the appendix (appendectomy), gallbladder (cholecystectomy), or sections of the bowel
- Urology: Kidney surgery and treatment of ureter conditions
- Bariatric surgery: Gastric bypass or gastric sleeve procedures for obesity
Preparation and Procedure
Laparoscopy is typically performed under general anesthesia. Pre-operative preparation usually includes blood tests, an ECG, and fasting for at least six hours before the procedure. The duration of the surgery ranges from approximately 20 minutes for simple diagnostic procedures to several hours for complex interventions.

Mild discomfort, bloating from the CO₂ gas, and a feeling of fullness are common in the first few days. Physical rest and avoidance of heavy lifting are recommended for one to two weeks. Follow-up appointments with the treating physician are an essential part of recovery.
