What is Intestinal Villus Protection?
Intestinal villus protection encompasses all measures and biological mechanisms aimed at maintaining the structural and functional integrity of the intestinal villi (Villi intestinales). These are microscopic, finger-like projections covering the inner lining of the small intestine. They dramatically increase the absorptive surface area of the gut, enabling the efficient uptake of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Their health is fundamental to proper digestion and a well-functioning immune system.
The Importance of Intestinal Villi
The lining of the small intestine is covered with millions of villi, collectively forming an absorptive surface of up to 200 square metres. Each villus contains blood and lymphatic vessels through which absorbed nutrients enter the circulatory system. In addition, the villi contribute to immune defense by acting as a first barrier against pathogens and harmful substances. Damage to the villi results in malabsorption – an impaired ability to absorb nutrients – with far-reaching health consequences.

- Coeliac disease: An autoimmune reaction to gluten destroys the intestinal villi, causing their characteristic flattening (villous atrophy).
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Conditions such as Crohn's disease can chronically damage the intestinal mucosa and villi.
- Infections: Viral or bacterial gastroenteritis can temporarily compromise villus architecture.
- Medications: Certain drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or chemotherapy agents can injure the intestinal lining.
- Nutritional deficiencies: Inadequate intake of essential nutrients, particularly zinc, vitamin A, and glutamine, impairs villus regeneration.
- Radiation therapy: Abdominal radiation can damage the sensitive intestinal epithelial cells.

- Targeted nutritional supplementation to correct deficiency states
- Mucosal protectants: substances that directly shield and strengthen the intestinal lining
- Enteral or parenteral nutrition in severe cases to allow gut rest and recovery

Beyond diet and medical therapy, additional lifestyle factors contribute to intestinal villus protection. Stress reduction, adequate sleep, regular physical activity, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and smoking all help to maintain a healthy intestinal mucosa in the long term.
Diagnosis of Villus Damage
Several diagnostic methods are available to assess the condition of the intestinal villi. Small intestinal biopsy obtained during gastroscopy is considered the gold standard, allowing direct histological evaluation of villus structure. Complementary investigations include blood tests for nutritional deficiency markers, stool tests, and antibody assays (e.g., for suspected coeliac disease).
