Safety and Regulatory Status
E460 is authorized in the European Union under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on food additives. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated cellulose as safe for use in food. No Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) has been established, meaning the substance is considered safe at typical consumption levels. The WHO and FAO also classify cellulose as a safe food additive.
Possible Side Effects
No harmful effects are known at normal consumption levels. At very high intakes, as with other dietary fibers, symptoms such as bloating, flatulence, or changes in bowel habits may occur.
